enter site This journey to magical Orkney and Shetland is designed for travellers interested in writing, walking, history and the natural world.

Dr Inga Simpson (author of Understory, Nest, oral antibiotics used for infections Mr Wigg, and watch Where the Trees Were) teams up with archaeologist Dr Christopher Carter (of Time Travel Australia) to offer a unique combination of travel and retreat, walking and writing — an immersion in some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, rich in natural, human and literary histories.

Orkney features some of the best-known neolithic ruins, Skara Brae and the Ness of Brodgar on Mainland. We’ll venture further afield to the islands of Hoy, Rousay and Westray, visiting a range of sites and spectacular landscapes. The islands are also rich in birdlife, with the sea a constant and powerful presence.

Shetland, the northernmost part of Scotland, is even more remote, containing a broad range of prehistoric ruins. It is here that you will have the opportunity to participate in a real archaeological dig!

Writing workshops

Along the way, you’ll learn how to capture what you see and experience on the page, through a series of practical workshops, and one-on-one feedback from Inga.

The writing workshops are suitable for writers at all levels, whether interested in nature writing, travel writing, memoir, fiction, blog-writing, short pieces or book-length projects. The workshop content will be tailored to suit the interests and skills of participants.

Our time spent immersed landscape will include daily writing workshops, exploring a range of techniques for writing about place, in combination with plot and character. The workshops utilise a mixture of tuition, examples (often from works set in those places we will be visiting), practical writing exercises and group discussion.

You’ll also have the opportunity to receive written and verbal feedback from Inga on up to 5000 words submitted beforehand. And the chance to apply what you have learned, developing a personal piece about your journey to submit to Inga for feedback.
