Classic, hermit and group retreats include accommodation, and breakfast in Olvar Wood's restful and inspiring writers' retreat. The larder at Olvar Wood is stocked prior to your arrival with kitchen basics, as well as a box of fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables. A shopping service is available.
Classic and hermit retreaters can also take advantage of our complementary editorial consultancy: feedback on your writing during a one-hour meeting with a writing mentor.
classic retreat
A classic retreat is an opportunity to come to Olvar and work on a manuscript in progress. Your visit can range from two days up to a month and may overlap with other writers' visits to Olvar, or with onsite events such as the Writers' Bookclub. You can choose to stay in your favourite room, depending on when you book/availability, and share use of the facilities and grounds.
hermit retreat
A hermit retreat is the perfect option for those writers who prefer solitude. Hermits get to stay in the Hemingway Room while enjoying full and exclusive use of Olvar Wood's facilities and grounds.
GROUP RETREAT
Group retreats are perfect for writers' groups who want to find a place to work together. The basic group rate includes full use of the whole house. We can also add on workshops or feedback for all or some of your group.
Feedback
Visitors to Olvar Wood can take advantage of our comlementary editorial consultancy service on up to 20,000 words per room booking for week-long, or up to 5000 words for weekend retreats. You will need to submit your pages a month before your retreat yin hard-copy.
During your retreat, the mentor will meet with you for up to one hour at Olvar wood to give you detailed feedback on your manuscript, and discuss ways to improve or further develop it. They will also be happy to discuss related issues with you, such as possible publication pathways, and other professional development opportunities. You can, of course, book additional time with a mentor during your stay. Additional support costs $50.00 per hour of the mentor's time.
Funding
Although Olvar Wood Writers Retreat does not supply or receive funding itself, you can apply for funding to support your visit to Olvar Wood through the state arts funding body. If you are a postgraduate student at a university, you can apply to use your discretionary funds to attend a retreat or course. We are happy to provide letters of support or other documentation for your application upon request.
