Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words. All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror that are of a "speculative" nature will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature, particularly those based on TV series. Crime horror submissions should be directed to another market.

Stories do not have to be explicitly Australian, although we always like to see some with Australian characterisation and background, provided the local element is not merely a self-conscious insertion into a standard plot.

Aurealis pays between $20 and $60 per 1000 words, depending on the level of government grants received, and payment will be made soon after the publication of the issue containing your story. Minimum payment is $20.

You will also receive a contributor's copy of the issue containing your story, and the option to buy additional copies of the magazine containing your story at a special contributor's rate.

We buy First Australian Serial Rights, the non-exclusive rights to publish the story electronically and the non-exclusive rights to include the story in an anthology. All other rights remain with the author.

Please do not query us before three months have passed since submitting your work. Unsuccessful authors will be emailed a reply via email. All submissions by subscribers will receive a personal email with a brief critique.

Aurealis does not publish poetry or novel extracts. We do not serialise longer works.

Aurealis is primarily a market for Australian stories but we are interested in publishing some stories from overseas authors from time to time. If you are not an Australian citizen and would like to submit, please query first stating the genre of your story, the word count and your previous publishing history to: submissions@aurealis.com.au

Please Note:

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to change or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but sometimes a market will die before we manage to update the listing! Just remember ...

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher on their website before submitting.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor/s would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For novel/collection publishers, unless their guidelines state otherwise, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript.
  • Include a SASE with all mailed submissions, queries, and requests for guidelines.
  • Unless their guidelines state otherwise, don't query the status of a submission until at least three months have passed since you submitted.
  • Keep track of all your submissions!
  • Be professional, patient and persistent.
